AMAZONIA IS THE LARGEST BRAZILIAN STATE !!
Amazonas is the largest Brazilian State, with 1,577,820 km2; it´s bigger than Germany, France, the UK and Italy combined; it´s slightly bigger than Alaska, and bigger than California and Texas combined.
The Equatorial Line crosses the north of the State; climate is equatorial, very hot and very humid (see weather in Manaus).
The State of Amazonas has its name associated with the river Amazonas (the river cuts across the State) and the Amazon forest (the State is nearly entirely covered by the forest; the forest extendes to other States and countries); these names derive from the legends of the Amazon women, who would have been seen by the first explorers of the region.
The Amazon forest is one of the largest remaining continuous tract of nature in the world. Although it is well known that the biodiversity of the forest is one of the richest on earth, it is far from being completely catalogued.
Measured by lenght, river Amazonas is the second in the world, after the Nile, in Egypt. However, by volume of water, nothing comes close to the Amazonas: it is estimated that the Amazonas alone pours one fourth of all the water thrown into the oceans of the world.
The capital is Manaus; during the first few decades of the 1900s, when Brazil was the almost monopolistic producer of rubber in the world, Manaus was one of the most sophisticated cities in the planet; most of the largest buildings in Manaus (such as, for example, the Opera House) date back to this epoch.
Other important cities of the State are Parintins (the second in population, famous for its Parintins Festival), Tefé, Manacapuru and Itacoatira.
Rivers are an important means of transportation (all important cities are built by a river); there are modern, safe, well maintained boats for tourists, but the local population depends on large (for mass transportation purposes), old and insecure ships. Accidents are frequent. Given the width of the Amazonas, even ocean cruiser vessels can go easily go as far inside as Manaus.
Notice that travel lenghts are measured in days, and that moving upstream takes twice as much as moving downstream.

RIVER _ RIO NEGRO AND SOLIMOES
Solimões-Negro River Confluence at Manaus, AmazoniaPosted February 12, 2005 download large image (638 KB, JPEG) The largest river on the planet, the Amazon, forms from the confluence of the Solimões (the upper Amazon River) and the Negro at the Brazilian city of Manaus in central Amazonas. At the river conjunction, the muddy, tan-colored waters of the Solimões meet the “black” water of the Negro River. The unique mixing zone where the waters meet extends downstream through the rainforest for hundreds of kilometers, and is a famous attraction for tourists from all over the world. The tourism contributes to substantial growth in the city of Manaus. Twenty years ago the large park near the city center (center) lay on the eastern outskirts of Manaus.
It is the vast quantity of sediment eroded from the Andes Mountains that gives the Solimões its tan color. By comparison, water in the Negro derives from the low jungles where reduced physical erosion of rock precludes mud entering the river. In place of sediment, organic matter from the forest floor stains the river the color of black tea.
The Solimões provides nutrient-rich mud to lakes on the floodplain (lower right). The ecology of muddy lakes differs correspondingly from that of nutrient-poor, blackwater rivers and lakes. Solimões water can be seen leaking into the Negro west of the main meeting zone (lower left). The Solimões is much shallower than the Negro because it has filled its valley and bed with great quantities of sediment since the valleys were excavated. Indeed, widths of the rivers differ for this reason (the Negro River is almost 20 km wide in the top left corner).

The excursion to the meeting of the waters between Rio Negro and Solimões leaves from the floating dock, navigating downstream the Rio Negro and observing at left bank the city of Manaus, some wooden houses - a typical building, the floating gas station, the Main Market and Educandos creek. We proceed to the meeting of the waters where the muddy waters of the Solimões River run side by side with the dark ones of the Rio Negro without mixing. Having good luck, we can see some species of Boto Tucuxi (Sotalia Fluviatalis) and Boto rosa (Inia Geoffrensis), dolphin frolicking above the water. After that, the boat take you across the Rio Negro to the Janauary Ecological Park which afford you a wonderful opportunity to canoe amidst creeks and flooded forests with their exotic fauna and flora, including the famous Victoria Regia water lilies. In summer time, creeks disappear because of the low level of the rivers, so instead of going to Janauary Park we visit Terra Nova island where you see Cocoa plantations and natives extracting latex from heave trees.

Our trips go beyond the tourist experience of most trips to the Amazon. We visit areas that are not visited by other groups. We see creatures that are almost never seen on other Amazon trips. The program is also active with several excursions off the boat every day. Every morning we walk in the forest. But there is no difficulty for older travelers because when we go into the forest we divide into small groups each with a private guide and woodsman.

FERNANDAO DE NORONHA "S ENVIROMENT !!
Fernando de Noronha is an isolated group of volcanic islands located in the South Equatorial Atlantic at 03° 51' south and 32° 25' west, approximately 215 miles from Cape Sao Roque in the state of Rio Grande do Norte and 340 miles from Recife, Pernambuco. The main islands are the visible parts of a range of submerged mountains . Consisting of 21 islands, islets and rocks of a volcanic origin, the main island has an area of 7.1 square miles, being 6.2 miles long and 2.2 miles at its maximum width. The perimeter measures 37.2 miles. The base of this enormous volcanic formation is 2480 feet below the surface. The main island, from which the group gets its name, makes up 91% of the total area; the islands of Rata, Sela Gineta, Cabeluda and Sao Jose, together with the islets of Leao and Viuva make up the rest. Geological studies indicate that the islands were formed around 2,000,000 years ago.
Climate
The climate is tropical, with two well defined seasons: the rainy season from January to August, and the dry season for the rest of the year. The heaviest rains occur between March and July, sometimes reaching almost 8 inches in 24 hours in March and April. October is the dryest month, when rainfall will not be greater than 0.36 inch in a 24 hour period. The average temperature is 77° F, with a variation of only 7.4°. The hottest months are January, February and March. The relative humidity varies little from 81.5 % due to the islands characteristics. Average annual sunshine is 3.215 hours per day, with a maximum in November and a minimum in April.
Land Vegetation
The land vegetation of the islands is made up mostly of vines and bushes with a few species of trees, principally represented by the Nyctaginaceae, Bignoniaceae, Anacardiaceae, Rubiaceae and Euphorbiaceae. There are also a great number of bushes and herbs not native to the island. Most noted among the bushes is the wild bean Capparis cynophallophora and the burra leiteira Sapium scleratum (native), that produces a caustic sap capable of causing serious burns on men and animals. Among the herbs are noted the jitiranas Ipomea spp. and Merremia spp., which are harmful climbing vines. Besides these, some fruit trees have been introduced on the island, such as the papaya, cashew, banana, tamarind, caja, guava, graviola, etc.
Various ornamental species have been introduced also, such as the almond Terminalia catappa, the royal poinciana Tebebuia impectiginosa , caraiba and serratifolia, the jasmin manga Plumeria alba, the eucalyptus, the coconut palm, in small numbers, and the carnauba Copernica prunifera, appear rarely.
Marine Vegetation
Compared to the Brazilian coastline, there is not a great variety of aquatic plants on Fernando de Noronha. This emphasizes the uniqueness of the marine ecosystem of these islands, to which few species have been able to adapt. Perhaps it is due to the lack of nutrients basic to the growth of these algae, since warm currents poor in organic material are characteristic of Fernando de Noronha.
Land Animals
As occurs on other isolated oceanic systems, the land fauna of the Archipelago Fernando de Noronha presents an exuberant bird life, much richer than the vertebrate groups such as amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, which are represented by only a few species.

The archipelago is home to the largest bird breeding colonies of all the islands of the Tropical South Atlantic.

Inland there are a few land birds, such as the sebito Vireo gracilirostis; the cocoruta Elainia spectabilis and the pomba avoante Zenaida auriculata noronha. As for the reptiles, there are two species of turtles: the aruana or green turtle Chelonia mydas, which uses the islands as its area of reproduction and feeding (herbivorous) and the young individuals of the Eretmochelys imbricata which use the islands for feeding and growth. Likewise, there are two species of lizards: mabuia Mabuya maculata (native) and the teju Tupinambis teguxim, which was introduced to feed on the rats, but prefers other prey such as the eggs and young of birds and turtles.

The Archipelago Fernando de Noronha hosts ecologic sites ideal for an exuberant marine animal life, due to its geographic location far from the continent and well within the path of the Southern Equatorial Current, as well as the nature of its climate, a fact clearly proven in various experiments. Over the years separate studies have discovered 168 families of mollusks, 72 species of crustaceans, and a large quantity of ornamental fish both native and migratory.
Environment Preservation
In 1988 approximately 70% of the archipelago was declared a National Marine Park, with the goal of preserving the land and marine environment. It is administered by the IBAMA. Towards its goal research projects are being developed, such as: recording native and migratory bird species both marine and land; studying the behavior and reproduction of the golfinho rotador stenella longirostris; the ecology and reproduction of the crustaceans of the upper, middle and lower coast; shark research and the TAMAR PROJECT (marine turtles). These subjects are offered to the tourists each night at the visitors center of the project, nearby the headquarters of IBAMA.

Today Fernando de Noronha is a model of enviornmental preservation, existing side by side with small scale tourist activities, which are limited by the existing facilities. Permanent works built by the ONG's and Foundations, contribute to the perfecting of the conservational policies.

É o terceiro maior negócio em contrabando depois de drogas e armas. Os traficantes combinam ingenuidade com desumanidade nos métodos de disfarce da bagagem/animal. A maioria dos especialistas em desvendar o tráfico animal concorda que a melhor estratégia é conscientizar os compradores e não os vendedores (pois este tráfico é extremamente lucrativo para eles).

Existem hoje, no mundo, em torno de 7500 tigres; 60% deles estão em território indiano, divididos em 21 reservas. A India tem sido o pais que mais se dedica à preservação, mas seus esforços têm sido fortemente ameaçados por traficantes ligados ao rico mercado do tigre: vendem seus ossos (famosos na medicina chinesa), sua pele, sua carne e até mesmo seus olhos. Os curandeiros chineses acreditam que o pó de seus ossos cura reumatismo e garante longevidade, pílulas feitas dos olhos acabam com as convulsões, o pênis traz virilidade (um prato de sopa desta parte do corpo do tigre pode custar $320 US na Tailândia). Sua pele pode chegar à $15000 US no mercado Árabe. Além do tráfico, o aumento da população que disputa a caça com os tigres, destrói seu "habitat" natural e finalmente investe contra eles próprios, são sua maior ameaça. Os tigres sempre exerceram fascínio sobre os homens: os registros remontam até 6000 anos atrás, onde desenhos de tigres foram encontrados próximo ao rio Amur na Rússia. Segundo os arqueólogos, os habitantes da região os reverenciavam como seus ancestrais e como Deuses. Na mitologia hindu o tigre é o veículo da Deusa Durga; na China do Patriarca Chang Tao-ling. Na região do Mar Cáspio, eles se extinguiram em 1970, na Ilha de Java em 1980, e em Bali em 1940. A India é hoje o lugar onde a batalha pela sobrevivência dos tigres vai ser ganha ou perdida. Em 1957, com 23 anos, Dra.Jane viajou para o Kênia começando a trabalhar com o Paleontologista Dr.Louis S.B.Leakey, que a incentivou a estudar os chimpanzés na Tanzânia, estudo que iniciou em 1960. Desde 1965 que seu trabalho vem chamando a atenção de todos, leigos e cientistas, tanto pelas descobertas revolucionárias sobre o comportamento dos chimpanzés, quanto pela sua luta pela preservação. Hoje, sua área de trabalho corresponde à maior comunidade de estudo animal do mundo.Dra.Jane criou o programa "Roots & Shoots" com o objetivo de conscientizar as crianças africanas sobre os animais plantando as sementes para a conservação futura. A maior parte dos gorilas ainda existentes hoje, encontra-se em reservas distribuídas no Zaire, Uganda e Ruanda. O gorila das montanhas, impressionante, "inteligente, gentil, vulnerável", alvo de lendas e fantasias, sofreu neste século a maior ameaça de sua história. Desde a época da África-colônia, alemães e belgas, além de caçarem gorilas, dividiram seu habitat em fazendas e territórios arrendados para esquemas de agricultura européia. Programas de conservação e conscientização ecológica começaram a surgir somente na década de 70, quando a Sociedade de Conservação da Vida Animal - New York, em consórcio com outras organizações conservacionistas, criaram o Projeto do Gorila da Montanha. Hoje este projeto é um dos maiores exemplos de sucesso na história da conservação animal. Em Ruanda, o sucesso foi tão surpreendente que a população do pais passou a orgulhar-se de seus gorilas a ponto de não os ameaçarem durante a última guerra civil, em 1990. Apesar das reservas e florestas serem invadidas pelo exército, só se tem notícia de um gorila morto nos quatro (4) anos de guerra, e no auge do conflito, o Primeiro Ministro de Ruanda declarou publicamente o compromisso de seu pais com os gorilas. As duas etnias em guerra, Tutsi e Hutu, concordaram em não matá-los.
Triste Notícia: 1999 - re-iniciada a guerra civil em Ruanda. Estatísticas divulgadas pela imprensa mundial revelam que no último semestre de 1998 foram mortos 23 gorilas em Ruanda, vítimas das revanches Hutus, quando também assassinaram vários turistas britânicos e americanos. As autoridades do país perderam o controle da situação mais uma vez.
Panda
O Panda, originário da China, corre grande risco de extinção. Tanto as mudanças climáticas - esquentamento - quanto mudanças no seu habitat - aumento da população envolvente e conseqüente diminuição de alimento, são grandes ameaças. Ele é vegetariano, se alimenta basicamente de bambus, tem dificuldade de enxergar, não se reproduz em cativeiro e não suporta o calor forte. Várias organizações internacionais têm se esforçado para salvar este que é um dos mais meigos entre os animais de grande porte.
Hellabrunn Zoo
O moderno zoológico Hellabrunn, em Munich, Alemanha, é um dos mais interessantes projetos de recuperação e criação de espécies em risco de extinção. A manutenção dos animais em ambiente natural, a criação das espécies ameaçadas para posterior transposição para suas regiões de origem, são a especialidade do zoológico que cria uma enorme quantidade de espécies que vão das aranhas mexicanas "redknees" (joelhos-vermelhos) a uma variedade de pássaros e de animais de grande porte onde sua estória mais surpreendente é o sucesso com os Przewalski, uma sub-espécie de cavalos selvagens originários da Mongólia, descobertos por volta de 1870 por um explorador russo.
Projeto Tamar
O Projeto Tamar é um dos mais bem sucedidos projetos de preservação de espécies marinhas em risco de extinção no Brasil. Dedicado à preservação das tartarugas marinhas o projeto estende-se por toda a costa brasileira inclusive Fernando de Noronha e Atol das Rocas, dividindo a costa em áreas de alimentação, de reprodução e mistas. As tartarugas têm mais de 150 milhões de anos, resistiram a inúmeras ameaças inclusive adaptando-se de seu habitat original que era a terra, para o marítimo, o que gerou várias mutações no processo de adaptação, mantendo apenas a desova em terra - em praias desertas e durante a noite. Este é seu ponto mais vulnerável. O crescimento populacional e conseqüente invasão das praias tanto com pessoas como com luz elétrica, tem diminuído drasticamente os locais de reprodução das tartarugas marinhas gerando risco de extinção. Os esforços do Projeto Tamar têm garantido-lhes a continuação da espécies.
Situação Mundial
Cientistas do Plano das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente calculam que existam entre 10 e 100 milhões de espécies de seres vivos no planeta. Hoje, somente 1,4 milhões são conhecidos e 25% estão ameaçados de extinção. Todo dia, no mundo inteiro, desaparecem quase trezentas espécies animais e vegetais devido à destruição de seus habitats. O Brasil é um dos países com o maior nível de biodiversidade do planeta. Infelizmente, vários fatores têm contribuído para a destruição de grandes áreas dos ecossistemas mais ricos do país: Amazônia, Pantanal, Mata Atlântica e Cerrado. Dentre as atividades que ameaçam estes ecossistemas estão a agricultura e pecuária, a extração de madeira, a mineração e a indústria poluente. Em 1990 o IBAMA compilou uma lista de animais em extinção no Brasil. A maioria das espécies é oriunda da Amazônia, Mata Atlântica e Pantanal. Entre eles estão: 57 mamíferos, 108 aves, 9 répteis e 32 invertebrados.

Pura, com farinha ou arroz e feijão, a polpa do açaí está no cardápio diário dos paraenses e alimenta também uma cadeia produtiva que começa nas propriedades ribeirinhas e vai parar até na mesa dos consumidores australianos e americanos. Uma das frutas mais populares da região norte do Brasil é o tema da nossa segunda reportagem sobre projetos de desenvolvimento sustentável e combate à pobreza na Amazônia.

A conversa animada do grupo de associados reunidos em frente à sede da Coopfrut - cooperativa mista de pequenos produtores rurais de Igarapé-Miri - sugere que o assunto gira em torno da fruta que devolveu o sorriso e confiança aos agricultores da região: o açaí. Engano.
Os agricultores desta região, distante 150 quilômetros da capital Belém, trocam informações sobre as plantações e cultivo de laranja, maracujá, caju, cupuaçu e outras espécies frutíferas locais como o taperebau e o buriti. Longe de imaginar que eles pensam em substituir o plantio da cultura mais tradicional do interior paraense, o do açaí. “Além do açaí, eu estou plantando em casa outras frutas como maracujá, cupuaçu ... e estou incentivando outros produtores a fazerem o mesmo para que daqui um ano, um ano e meio, a gente possa estar trazendo essas frutas para serem processadas na fábrica nos períodos de entressafra do açaí”, diz Lauro Fonseca de Vilhana, conselheiro da cooperativa.
Os pequenos produtores de açaí da região aprenderam, com os técnicos do POEMA e da Emater, a fazer a colheita selecionada.
Com o sucesso da polpa do açaí, a estratégia dos pequenos produtores agora é diversificar a produção e garantir o abastecimento para que a fábrica de processamento de frutas da Coopfrut possa funcionar o ano inteiro, sem interrupção, inclusive no período de entressafra do açaí, nos primeiros meses de cada ano.
Construída pelo programa interdisciplinar da Universidade Federal do Pará, o POEMA - Pobreza e Meio Ambiente na Amazônia -, com recursos regionais e da União Européia, a sede administrativa da cooperativa funciona em escritórios ao lado dos equipamentos e câmaras frigoríficas que processam e estocam a polpa do açaí e dos laboratórios onde são realizadas pesquisas para o desenvolvimento de produtos a serem lançados no mercado.
Desde a criação em 1999, a Coopfrut se tornou o porto seguro para os 273 pequenos produtores rurais . Eles estão reunidos em 17 associações que fazem parte do projeto, envolvendo as famílias ribeirinhas que produzem o açaí e a agroindústria que agrega valor à fruta com o processamento e comercialização da polpa.
Preço fixo e compra garantida da produção dos associados
A chegada da Coopfrut foi a garantia para os associados de que a produção deles tem um comprador certo e um preço justo pago pela fruta . “A cooperativa surgiu para resolver os problemas dos produtores que jogavam o açaí fora, deixavam estragar porque não tinha comprador ou vendiam a 50 centavos uma lata”, lembra o presidente da cooperativa, Milton Machado .
Milton Machado, presidente da Coopfrut, conseguiu aumentar o preço da fruta e afastar os marreteiros.
Na última safra, o preço pago ao produtor foi de R$ 5,10 a rasa de açaí com 28 quilos do produto. O valor foi discutido entre os associados e votado em assembléia e representa quase o dobro do que pagam os marreteiros, como são chamados os atravessadores que pagam mal e lucram em cima da produção dos agricultores .
O preço fixo motiva o produtor a entregar o açaí para a cooperativa e com isso a fábrica consegue atingir as metas de comercialização do produto beneficiado. “Para a próxima safra estamos discutindo uma proposta de R$ 5,50 e se houver sobras vai ser dividido com os cooperados”, diz otimista a tesoureira Maria José Soares Santos . “O preço é razoável, paga as despesas da colheita e garante uma vida digna que o pequeno produtor não tinha antes”, acrescenta.
Além de comprar a produção, a Coopfrut vai buscar de caminhão o açaí trazido pelas comunidades até a beira do rio Igarapé-Miri, distante poucos quilômetros da agroindústria.
Barcos e antenas parabólicas: sinais de uma melhoria de vida
Na descida pelo rio Merú, em direção às comunidades de Nazarezinho e Tucumandeua, o desfile contínuo dos açaizais só é interrompido quando surgem nas margens ribeirinhas as casas simples de madeira e palafitas .

Nos quintais das propriedades é possível avistar de longe, no topo da palmeira típica da região amazônica, os peconheiros, como são chamados os apanhadores de açaí que sobem até 25 metros para colher o cacho maduro, usando nos pés apenas um ramo torcido de folhas da árvore.
“Os produtores hoje sabem colher direitinho porque foram todos treinados”, comenta o presidente da Coopfrut, Milton Machado.
O trabalho de organização social dessas comunidades e o ensino de técnicas agrícolas, para os produtores fazerem o manejo correto do açaí e uma colheita selecionada da fruta, foi a primeira fase do projeto.
Técnicos do POEMA e da Emater, empresa de assistência técnica
e extensão rural, vieram até às propriedades desenvolver o trabalho de base junto aos produtores que estavam acostumados a plantarem e colherem a partir de experiências próprias, sem nenhum conhecimento técnico.
“Hoje, a gente está seguindo as orientações como o espaçamento de 3 a 5 metros entre uma planta e outra na hora do plantio. Antes não, limpava a área e plantava de qualquer jeito . Agora dá mais produção. E hoje a gente já seleciona no pé. O que não está maduro a gente deixa. Antes colhia tudo junto”, lembra Joani Gonçalves de Melo, explicando que só colhe o açaí quando ele está pretinho no cacho, deixando o verde na árvore para colher na chamada safrinha.
O trabalho desenvolvido através da cooperativa também eliminou uma prática que só trazia prejuízos aos agricultores. “Antes a venda era individual. Cada um colhia o seu, os preços eram diferenciados e o negócio não ia para frente. Agora o produto já é vendido consorciado e os atravessadores ficaram de lado”, garante Salim Vitor de Melo, produtor, de 66 anos. “Antes nós vendíamos nossos produtos para marreteiros. Em época de safra só faltava dar o produto. Quando chegava na cidade dava o horário da venda do açaí e, se não vendia, jogava fora. Perdia o capital. Agora não, já não tem mais prejuízo porque vende direto para a cooperativa, já tem segurança, e na safra o preço não cai”, diz o produtor Joani .

O aumento do número de barcos circulando pelos rios e as antenas parabólicas em cima dos tetos das casas captando imagens de televisão são apontados como benefícios já trazidos pela adesão à cooperativa.
“A maioria dos produtores está satisfeita e novas associações estão sendo formadas porque só assim a
gente consegue melhorar o
bem-estar social da família e do município”, conclui Salim.
Açaí para paulistas, cariocas, americanos e australianos
Em época de safra, a viagem para coleta e entrega do açaí nas comunidades ribeirinhas dura em média entre 3 e 4 horas . Na agroindústria, o açaí passa por equipamentos que transformam a fruta in natura em polpa; ela é estocada pura ou misturada com mel e essências de frutas regionais como guaraná , cupuaçu, e tradicionais como abacaxi e maracujá.
O sucesso, principalmente entre consumidores de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro onde a polpa e o suco de açaí eram servidos como repositores de energia em bares e academias de ginástica, motivou os produtores da Coopfrut . A capacidade de produção foi ampliada e hoje já pode atingir 600 toneladas com a conquista também do mercado externo. O mix “açaí com guaraná”, por exemplo, caiu no gosto dos consumidores nos Estados Unidos. E a Austrália já encomendou 75 toneladas de açaí misturado com maracujá, acerola, cupuaçu e abacaxi.
“O açaí é o ouro preto para nós produtores paraenses”, exalta o presidente da Coopfrut, Milton Machado.
Para o engenheiro químico, Raimundo Frazão, responsável pelo controle de qualidade da fábrica, o sucesso da fruta se deve a suas propriedades naturais. “O açaí tem um antioxidante, a antocianina, que desentope as artérias e tem muita fibra, além de uma parte de ferro excelente para o organismo”, explica.
Raimundo Frazão controla a qualidade do mix açaí-com-guaraná exportado para Austrália e Estados Unidos.
No laboratório da Coopfrut, Raimundo Frazão está na fase final de suas pesquisas com outro produto típico da Amazônia, o buriti. Não há fruto no mundo que tenha mais vitamina A do que o buriti . Ele tem 10 vezes mais vitamina A que a cenoura, afirma o engenheiro.

em sopas e na fabricação de
massas e biscoitos recheados.
De olho nesse filão inexplorado do mercado, os produtores já estão conservando a planta, usada nessa região principalmente para fazer rampas para acesso às casas . “O buriti vai estourar no mercado como o açaí”, afirma convencido o engenheiro Frazão, já trabalhando com a hipótese de criar uma cadeia produtiva igual à bem sucedida experiência com o açaí .

O aumento do número de barcos circulando pelos rios e as antenas parabólicas em cima dos tetos das casas captando imagens de televisão são apontados como benefícios já trazidos pela adesão à cooperativa.
“A maioria dos produtores está satisfeita e novas associações estão sendo formadas porque só assim a
gente consegue melhorar o
bem-estar social da família e do município”, conclui Salim.
Açaí para paulistas, cariocas, americanos e australianos
Em época de safra, a viagem para coleta e entrega do açaí nas comunidades ribeirinhas dura em média entre 3 e 4 horas . Na agroindústria, o açaí passa por equipamentos que transformam a fruta in natura em polpa; ela é estocada pura ou misturada com mel e essências de frutas regionais como guaraná , cupuaçu, e tradicionais como abacaxi e maracujá.
O sucesso, principalmente entre consumidores de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro onde a polpa e o suco de açaí eram servidos como repositores de energia em bares e academias de ginástica, motivou os produtores da Coopfrut . A capacidade de produção foi ampliada e hoje já pode atingir 600 toneladas com a conquista também do mercado externo. O mix “açaí com guaraná”, por exemplo, caiu no gosto dos consumidores nos Estados Unidos. E a Austrália já encomendou 75 toneladas de açaí misturado com maracujá, acerola, cupuaçu e abacaxi.
“O açaí é o ouro preto para nós produtores paraenses”, exalta o presidente da Coopfrut, Milton Machado.
Para o engenheiro químico, Raimundo Frazão, responsável pelo controle de qualidade da fábrica, o sucesso da fruta se deve a suas propriedades naturais. “O açaí tem um antioxidante, a antocianina, que desentope as artérias e tem muita fibra, além de uma parte de ferro excelente para o organismo”, explica.
Raimundo Frazão controla a qualidade do mix açaí-com-guaraná exportado para Austrália e Estados Unidos.
No laboratório da Coopfrut, Raimundo Frazão está na fase final de suas pesquisas com outro produto típico da Amazônia, o buriti. Não há fruto no mundo que tenha mais vitamina A do que o buriti . Ele tem 10 vezes mais vitamina A que a cenoura, afirma o engenheiro.
A idéia é fazer farinha de buriti para substituir o trigo
em sopas e na fabricação de
massas e biscoitos recheados.
De olho nesse filão inexplorado do mercado, os produtores já estão conservando a planta, usada nessa região principalmente para fazer rampas para acesso às casas . “O buriti vai estourar no mercado como o açaí”, afirma convencido o engenheiro Frazão, já trabalhando com a hipótese de criar uma cadeia produtiva igual à bem sucedida experiência com o açaí .

Nome científico: Euterpe oleracea Mart.
Família: Arecaceae
Origem e distribuição geográfica: O açaizeiro tem como centro de origem a Amazônia Oriental Brasileira, mais precisamente a região do estuário do Rio Amazonas. No estuário do grande rio, são encontradas densas e diversificadas populações naturais, com variações bem acentuadas no que concerne às características morfológicas, fenológicas, fisiológicas e agronômicas das plantas. As variações encontradas dentro das populações, normalmente, são mais expressivas que entre as populações.No Brasil, ocorre em estado nativo no Pará, Amapá, Maranhão, Tocantins e Mato Grosso. É também encontrado, espontaneamente, na Guiana, Guiana Francesa, Suriname, Venezuela, Panamá, Equador, Panamá, Equador e Trinidad. Nesses países, a espécie é pouco explorada, por ocorrer em baixa freqüência e com poucos indivíduos por hectare.
Descrição da planta: É uma palmeira multicaule, com até 25 estipes por touceira. Os estipes, nos indivíduos adultos, apresentam altura e diâmetro variando entre 3 m e 20 m e entre 7 cm e 18 cm, respectivamente. Cada estipe sustenta, em sua porção terminal, um conjunto de 8 a 14 folhas compostas, pinadas e de arranjo espiralado, com 40 a 80 pares de folíolos, opostos ou subopostos. A inflorescência do açaizeiro é infrafoliar e disposta quase horizontalmente. Nos dois primeiros terços de cada ráquila as flores estão dispostas em tríades, com cada flor feminina ladeada por duas flores masculinas. No terço terminal das ráquilas encontra-se, normalmente, somente flores masculinas. As inflorescências apresentam, em média, 80,5% de flores masculinas e 19,5% de flores femininas. O fruto é uma drupa globosa, apresentando resíduos florais, com diâmetro variando entre 1 cm e 2 cm e peso médio de 1,5 g. O epicarpo, nos frutos maduros, apresenta coloração arroxeada quase preta ou verde, dependendo do tipo. O mesocarpo é polposo e delgado, com espessura quase sempre igual ou inferior a 1 mm e envolve o volumoso e duro endocarpo o qual contém em seu interior uma semente, com embrião diminuto e abundante endosperma ruminado.
Propagação: É propagado por sementes, as quais germinam entre 22 dias e 48 dias após a semeadura. As mudas estão aptas para serem plantadas no local definitivo, seis a oito meses após a semeadura.
Variedades e clones: Não existem variedades nem clones de açaizeiro devidamente caracterizados e avaliados. Nas populações naturais e nos pomares encontram-se diversos tipos que se distinguem entre si pelas seguintes características: cor e tamanho dos frutos, tamanho dos cachos, disposição das ráquilas, diâmetro dos estipes, número de estipes por touceira, entre outras. Os dois tipos mais comuns são: o açaí roxo, também denominado de açaí preto e o açaí branco. O primeiro apresenta frutos com coloração arroxeada, quase preta, quando completamente maduros; no segundo tipo, a coloração dos frutos, mesmo quando completamente maduros, é verde.
Clima e solo: Espécie tipicamente tropical, desenvolve-se melhor e apresenta maior produtividade em locais com tipos climáticos quentes e úmidos e com precipitação de chuvas superior a 1.800 mm, bem distribuídas nos meses do ano. Não é indicado o seu cultivo em áreas com temperaturas médias anuais inferiores a 21° C. Pode ser cultivado tanto em solos de terra firme como em solos de várzea. A espécie dispõe de mecanismos adaptativos para sobreviver em solos com baixa tensão de oxigênio, no entanto, o seu cultivo em áreas permanentemente inundadas não é recomendado, pois o crescimento da planta e a produção de frutos são bastante afetados.
Espaçamento: O espaçamento indicado para a cultura é de 5 m x 5 m, com quatro plantas por touceira, o qual possibilita o estabelecimento de 1.600 plantas hectare. No plantio do açaizeiro em consórcio com o cupuaçuzeiro, a primeira espécie deve ser plantada no espaçamento de 5 m x 5 m e a segunda, no espaçamento de 10 m x 10 m. Nesse sistema, cada hectare comporta 400 cupuaçuzeiros e 100 touceiras de açaizeiro, cada uma manejada com quatro plantas.
